The Philippine Daily Inquirer reports that five Filipino botanists in Mindanao discovered a new ginger species which they named Etlingera lacerata Naive. This brings to eighteen (18) the total found in the country. Out of those, twelve (12) are endemic, which means they are only found in the Philippines.

The article is interesting and I have so many questions!

  • The locals say this is an edible species. What is the local name? Have they been using it for food and/or medicine? Any specialises uses?
  • How does it taste? Is it stronger or milder than the usual ginger we buy in the marketplace?
  • It is now considered an endangered species under the IUCN. Can we get rhizomes and grow it in pots at home to ensure its survival?

I have more questions. We’ll need to find this new ginger species to find the answers.
